Zapier just rolled out the biggest change to how Zaps work since the platform launched: Next Gen Zaps. Announced at ZapConnect 2026 on September 23, the update removes several of the hard limits that have forced small-business users into workarounds for years, and adds a monitoring agent that can catch and fix broken automations on its own. Here is exactly what changed and who can use it today.

What Launched
On September 23, 2026, at its ZapConnect conference, Zapier announced Next Gen Zaps — a new engine for building and running automations that replaces several of the hard limits built into classic Zaps. Instead of only clicking through Zapier’s visual editor, users can now describe a workflow in natural language inside MCP-enabled AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor and deploy it straight to Zapier, or build the same way directly inside Zapier itself using natural language, code, or a visual canvas.
What’s Actually New
Classic Zaps have quietly capped what small businesses could automate for years. Next Gen Zaps removes several of those caps directly:
- No more 500-item loop limit — lists of any size can now be processed in full in a single run, instead of silently stopping partway through.
- Branches that split and merge — a Zap can take different paths based on conditions and then roll back together into one flow, instead of needing separate parallel Zaps.
- Nested loops — loops inside loops are now supported, with results automatically rolled up into a summary at the end instead of requiring manual aggregation steps.
- Continue-on-error handling — a run can keep going after a single step fails, instead of the whole Zap stopping dead.
- Pause and resume — a workflow can pause to wait for a human reply or a scheduled follow-up, then pick back up automatically.

Self-Healing Workflows
The most notable addition is what Zapier calls a self-healing workflow: a monitoring agent that watches a Zap’s runs, diagnoses why a step failed, and can either apply a fix automatically or suggest one for a human to approve. For a small business running critical automations — order processing, lead routing, invoice follow-ups — this targets one of the most common pain points with automation tools: a silent failure that nobody notices until a customer complains.
Who Can Use It Today
Next Gen Zaps is currently in early access. Here is what that means in practice:
- Access must be requested at zapier.com/workflow/early-access.
- It is available on Pro, Team, and Enterprise paid plans — not the free plan.
- On Team plans, only an account owner or admin can request access for the organization.
- Zapier has published help-center guides covering getting started, the new Workflow Manager, drafts and versions, and what it calls Agentic Management.
What It Means for Small Businesses
If you’ve hit Zapier’s old 500-item loop cap while processing a customer list, or you’ve had a Zap quietly stop mid-run and only found out when a lead went cold, Next Gen Zaps is aimed squarely at that pain. It also lowers the bar for building an automation in the first place — describing what you want in plain language inside Claude or ChatGPT and deploying it to Zapier skips the trial-and-error of the visual editor entirely.
